Exclusive Services

With almost 20 years of experience working on water-related projects in Laos and the wider region, VGS has developed extensive expertise in underwater (bathymetric) surveying. VGS produces international-quality survey mapping, bathymetric profiles, and cross-sections for proposed hydropower developments. To date, VGS has undertaken surveys for more than 100 proposed hydropower projects throughout Laos.

Hydrometric Stations

VGS is now well on its way to installing its 50th hydrometric station. A typical VGS hydrometric station can include rain gauges, temperature and humidity sensors, wind-speed and wind-direction sensors, and, importantly, a range of river-level loggers for real-time monitoring of river levels. Data can be stored and uploaded whenever required or transmitted automatically via a local SIM card using the hydrometric logger and modem to a central server. In extremely remote locations, satellite communications provide a reliable, increasingly viable, and cost-effective solution for transferring monitoring data.

Staff Gauges

Staff gauges also play an important role where local authorities need to quickly assess river conditions at a glance. VGS has developed and refined the installation of tiered staff gauges along riverbanks, as well as secure gauge plates mounted to bridge pylons and other suitable structures. These systems provide a simple, highly visible, and reliable means of monitoring river levels in locations where immediate visual reference is important.

River Discharge and Flow Measurement

VGS uses a range of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) to measure river discharge and flow characteristics. For very low-flow rivers and smaller streams, VGS also utilises electromagnetic water-flow measurement instruments, providing accurate measurements where conventional ADCP applications may be less suitable.

Sediment Sampling

VGS's hydrology services also extend to sediment sampling and analysis. The company's equipment inventory includes systems for suspended-sediment sampling, deep-pipe riverbed sampling, and riverbed grab sampling. These techniques allow VGS to assess sediment transport, deposition, and riverbed conditions as part of broader hydrological and environmental investigations.

Boats and Field Operations

Of course, many of these services would not be possible without suitable vessels and field equipment. VGS currently operates seven boats, each selected and configured for different river conditions and survey requirements. Some of these vessels are semi-permanently stationed at locations throughout Laos where regular monthly monitoring is required. This enables VGS to maintain an efficient and reliable field presence, even in remote areas, while supporting long-term hydrological monitoring programmes. Through its combination of experienced personnel, specialist surveying and hydrometric equipment, field vessels, and extensive knowledge of Laos's river systems, VGS is well equipped to deliver comprehensive hydrology, hydrometry, bathymetric surveying, and river monitoring services throughout Laos and the wider region.
